LAKE Bonney Yacht Club skippers competed in a re-sail of championship heats 11 and 12, which were abandoned just after the Christmas break due to no breeze.
Weather conditions were perfect, with a gusty 10-to-15-knot east-southeast breeze coming straight over the town onto the race course.
The club championship title was at stake with ‘Just’ defending and only three points from ‘Bandit’.
The race course was tricky, with an almost predictable weather shift from east to south, and strong winds going upwind, that strangely enough lightened off on every downwind leg.
This was of advantage to the stronger wind contenders over the light-air flyer Aero7.
Race one result
1st – Contender – ‘Bandit’ – B. Delaine; 2nd – Contender – ‘Pushing Limits’ G. Ling; 3rd – Aero7 ‘Just’ S. Thomas.
Race two got away in similar conditions, although the wind had picked up throughout the afternoon.
‘Pushing Limits’ got away from the start very well, and was unchallenged until finishing.
‘Bandit’ was also off to a great start, leaving ‘Just’ playing catch up for the remainder of the course.
Race two result
1st ‘Pushing Limits’; 2nd ‘Bandit’; 3rd ‘Just’.
It was a costly weekend on the scoresheet for ‘Just’ who went from three points leading ‘Bandit’ to three points trailing, costing him the title, and very nearly dropping another position.
The Lake Bonney Yacht Club congratulates all three skippers on a great season of racing.
This Saturday is also a resail of B series handicap races one and two, with three boats capable of gaining the trophy, pending the race results.
