NEARLY 200 horses and riders from across SA flocked to Waikerie over the long weekend for three days of riding, jumping, fashions on the field, live entertainment and more.
The Waikerie Easter Show was held at the Waikerie Horse and Pony Club, and the club committee was “overwhelmed” by the number of participants following last year’s event cancellation.
Event spokesperson Megan DeTemmerman said the event drew more horses and riders than many previous years.
“It was a brilliant weekend with so many people, from Mildura all the way to Strathalbyn, making the trip to compete,” she said.
“We had about 180 horses and 130 riders signed on to compete, which is the most we’ve seen in years, and if a jumping show hadn’t been held in Mt Gambier over the same weekend, I think we would have had many more signed on.”
The three-day event included showjumping, fashions on the field, a full canteen, jumping under lights, live music on Saturday night, and an Easter egg hunt on Sunday.
Ms DeTemmerman said after last year’s coronavirus-enforced cancellation, many riders were “very excited” to return.
“Saturday night was a big night, with fashions on the field like they hold at the races, and four-bar jumping under the lights,” she said.
“Former Olympic jumper Wendy Schaeffer put on quite a performance, clearing 1.35m to win – it was fantastic to have her.
“Sunday morning was an early start at 6.30am with an Easter egg hunt, and about 20 kids were running over the field gathering the eggs hidden around the jumps and rails. It’s always fun to watch them.
“All in all, it was a very successful weekend, and (the organisers) were really overwhelmed with the support and positive feedback we received.
“We’re already planning to make next year’s Waikerie Easter Show bigger and better.”
