River-front retrofit hits top gear

BERRI Barmera Council is cracking on with the long-awaited retrofitting of sections of the Berri river-front redevelopment, with works expected to be completed in the next two months.
Council CEO Karyn Burton said the works, which began last month, were progressing well.
“I understand there (are) probably about another six weeks or so of works left,” she said.
“What they are trying to do is minimise the traffic interruptions as much as possible, so they are doing it in a strategic manner to ensure the whole road is not blocked off for too long.
“They will have it so the concreters and contractors can come through and do it all in one hit.
“It may look like it is a bit piecemeal, but they are doing it strategically so that the traffic is not disrupted as much.”
Ms Burton said road closures along Riverview Drive would occur, but that they would be kept to a minimum.
“(The contractors) are doing the best they can to keep things open, but of course it is all about safety as well,” she said.
The $250,000 project is being undertaken by Adelaide-based company Roadside Services and Solutions.
The works were initially expected to begin during the 2019-20 financial year, but were delayed due to difficulties securing contractors.
The project includes the removal of an S-bend along Riverview Drive, increased paving in front of the Berri Hotel and the improvement of sightlines at junctions along the road.
The retrofit received almost 70 per cent support during public consultation in 2020.
The retrofit will rectify problems with the initial $1.56 million redevelopment of the precinct, which was opened in 2018.
Further details, including a 3D render of council’s planned works on the river front, are available on the council website (berribarmera.sa.gov.au).
