THIS weekend’s much-anticipated Riverland Auto Street Party in Barmera has been postponed to 2023.
Spokesperson Graham Matthews said the flood-related cancellation of accommodation for travelling participants was the major contributor.
“This decision has not been made lightly,” Mr Matthews said.
“But after a great deal of discussion by the organising committee and a unanimous vote… we found there was no alternative other than to take this action.”
Mr Matthews said the accommodation cancellation would have impacted “potentially 50-plus cars and up to 150 people” and this factor, together with an unfavourable weather forecast, had led to the decision.
The event was expected to attract around 400 special interest vehicles from across SA, plus Victoria and NSW. Last year’s inaugural Street Party was a resounding success, and planning for the 2022 event had been ongoing for the past eight months.
The event also doubled as a fundraiser for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
“We’re really sorry for the late notice but trust you will understand the predicament we’ve been placed in…” Mr Matthews said.
“Please be assured we will not rest till we’ve found a new date to hold an even bigger and better Riverland Auto Street Party in 2023.”
