Unveiling set for Loxton Mini Silos

THE seven unique Loxton Mini Silos have now been painted and completed, and are situated within the Loxton Heritage and Conservation Park, in the median strip at the west end of Bookpurnong Terrace,  in Loxton.
Last year, this Loxton Mini Silo Project – undertaken by the Loxton Community Futures Tourism Workstream – began and explored the ‘Re-cycle, Re-use and Re-purpose’ theme with confidence.
The seven Mini Silos were constructed from recycled irrigation sumps and pipes, commonly found throughout the district’s earlier irrigation area.
Loxton Community Futures Inc secretary Kathy Schliebs said connecting with the Australian Silo Art Trail, and other tourism sites, and to act as a place of interest at the entrance to the Loxton township, was a goal.
Community members and visitors are invited to attend the Loxton Mini Silos Official Opening, to be conducted by Loxton Waikerie Mayor Trevor Norton, on Monday 14 April, commencing at 9.30 am. The trail’s opening address will be at the Sixth Street crossover Bookpurnong Terrace car park, with extra parking nearby.
Following the opening, everyone is welcome to explore, reflect and enjoy the installations while enjoying a coffee and treats from a local coffee van.
“The  Mini Silos, painted by Loxton artist Jarrod Loxton, feature local bird life, ground and river fauna, and have been completed as a result of generous sponsorship by Loxton community groups and individuals,” Ms Schliebs said.
“The seven Mini Silo structures aesthetically compliment the restful and historic setting of native flora, and the hand-crafted stone ruin representing the early homes in the district, including descriptive plaques relating to the town and district’s history and flood information.
“This park, launched in 2007 and complete with a central walking trail, is a hidden gem inside natural flora screens that divide the main western-sided Bookpurnong Terrace entrance to Loxton. Lush beautiful lawns and advanced trees are the focus, with seating, public conveniences, rest areas and ample parking close by.”
As it is not a gated park, visitors can enter the park anywhere. It has become a popular walking and bike trail for locals and visitors alike to explore, reflect and rest, while among nature’s beauty.
Further enquiries can be made to Ms Schliebs by phone on 0429 388 938.
