AFTER significant community consultation, Glossop High School has decided on a new school name, which will change in line with the school’s move to one campus in 2022.
The school will be renamed and rebranded to Berri Regional Secondary College from 2022, a name decided by the Governing Council, the school’s branding focus group and wider community.
Principal Emily Griggs said she was “excited” about the new name change.
“The name was decided a little while ago with the help of our branding focus committee, who worked around the community consultation, analysed data and put recommendations forward,” she said.
“Throughout the consultation period we trialled out new names to see how the community would respond and we listened loud and clear.
“We had a survey, which attracted more than 2400 responses, and the name ‘Berri’ was in most responses.
“I’ve heard a lot of positive comments about the new name and I think everyone is just happy we have a name now because it shows we are moving forward as a school.”
Mrs Griggs said the three parts of the school’s new name – Berri Regional Secondary College – each tell a story.
“Berri came out strong in the consultation process because it was going to be the location of the school and people felt strongly about having the name linked to that,” she said.
“Regional came about because from the start we made it very clear that we don’t just represent Berri, we also serve a range of other communities across the region and we wanted to be inclusive of that.
“Secondary College might be the more contentious aspect of the name but we spoke in depth about it at the Governing Council meeting.
“One of the things we said right from the word go in projecting our new name was that we need to be a school for the now but (also) a school for the future, which shows our progressive nature.
“The new private school coming soon in Renmark will also be a college, so we wanted to be part of something new and unique to make our school stand out.”
Mrs Griggs said the history of Glossop High School will remain strong.
“There’s a lot of mourning in the community for Glossop High School,” she said.
“We will continue to ensure we represent the rich history of Glossop High as much as we can by still being true to the current and future students of our school.”
The school is currently working on its new branding, school colours and uniform, which will all be decided early next year.
