THE Waikerie Rotary Club has received $350,000 from the Federal Government to upgrade and improve safety along the Waikerie Clifftop Walk.
The money has been allocated through the Federal Government’s Economic Development program, which aims to strengthen and diversify the economies of local communities impacted by aspects of the Murray–Darling Basin Plan.
The 2km walk runs from the Waikerie Ferry through the pumping station grounds to the lookout, and then along the picturesque clifftop.
The Waikerie Rotary Club’s clifftop walk project facilitator, Graeme Thompson, said the District Council of Loxton Waikerie engaged a consultant to assist the Rotary Club to apply for the grant.
Mr Thompson said the refurbishment of the clifftop walk would include creating a wheelchair and walker friendly viewing area over the cliffs and river near the Waikerie Silo Art.
“The aim is to allow people to come to the parking area and allow those with walkers and wheelchairs to head out to a lookout,” Mr Thompson said.
“That is one of the priorities of the project.”
Mr Thompson said debris from areas that were used as a rubbish dump years ago would also be removed.
“We hope to replace all of the pine post barriers with a more suitable product such a recycled plastic, similar to what they have used on the Waikerie river front,” he said
The project is expected to take about a year to complete.
